About Me

Anne Carlsen

I admit that as a kid, Instructional Designer was not what I decided to be when I grew up (I'm pretty sure that had something to do with drawing or reading) the career somehow chose me. I've never had a "normal" job (movie theater projectionist, weird girl that worked in the comic shop, military intel etc...) but every job I had, I was put in charge of training others.

I kind of evolved (I like to call it leveled up) into an instructor, then training developer, and finally Instructional Desiger organically. I am currently a Senior Instructional Designer at a software company where I design and develop software training.

My specialized ID skills include technical training, software and XR simulations, rapid adoption of design software and training technology, and graphic design. I have a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology with a concentration in Multimedia and Visual Communication, a Graduate certificate for Instructional Design at UW-Stout, I'm a US Army certified Instructor and Training Developer, and I'm currently attending UW-Whitewater for my Master of Science in Instructional Design and Learning Technology. ...plus I'm a graphics geek that likes to make my learning pretty whenever possible!

This portion of my portfolio was designed specifically for my UWW class, so if you're curious about the rest of my portfolio, click Home here or in the top navigation bar. And feel free to connect on LinkedIn.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit Orientation

American Legion Auxiliary Unit Orientation

As a veteran, I am a member of a local American Legion Post and its Auxiliary Unit. One thing that struck me as I recently started attending meetings is that we have absolutely no web presence for the Auxiliary. I designed this Rise module to teach potential and current members about our history, the projects that we do to support our vets, and identify valuable resources available to them. The interactivity is intentionally basic as some of the target audience may not be confident in heavily interactive navigation. This is an evergreen training and I have also offered this up as creative commons for other units if they need help creating a web presence.

Rise Redesign for Structural Gamification Storyboard

Rise Redesign for Structural Gamification Storyboard

One of my assignments was to redesing a pre-existing training and gamify it. The actual training isn't included here, but I created a storyboard that added a badge and test out system to my previous course's team project. I redesigned the flow and put in breakpoints where the learner could test out of sections of the training. Then there were the acheivement badges, can you tell I love video games?

TechTalk Video

TechTalk Video

One of our assignments was to create a video tech talk. I decided to create a tutorial for embedding media into Canvas LMS. I loved doing this, especially the part about staging a lesson in Canvas. I got to teach about my favorite eLearning! I've found a way to sneak this into my teaching before, and it never fails to be a hit. You'll have to see for yourself, I don't want to spoil it here! ;)

This techtalk is over 7 minutes long, it's totally worth the watch, though!
