About Me

Anne Carlsen

I admit that as a kid, Instructional Designer was not what I decided to be when I grew up (I'm pretty sure that had something to do with drawing or reading) the career somehow chose me. I've never had a "normal" job (movie theater projectionist, weird girl that worked in the comic shop, military intel etc...) but every job I had, I was put in charge of training others.

I kind of evolved (I like to call it leveled up) into an instructor, then training developer, and finally Instructional Desiger organically. I am currently a Senior Instructional Designer at a software company where I design and develop software training.

My specialized ID skills include technical training, software and XR simulations, rapid adoption of design software and training technology, and graphic design. I have a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology with a concentration in Multimedia and Visual Communication, a Graduate certificate for Instructional Design at UW-Stout, I'm a US Army certified Instructor and Training Developer, and I'm currently attending UW-Whitewater for my Master of Science in Instructional Design and Learning Technology. ...plus I'm a graphics geek that likes to make my learning pretty whenever possible!

Thanks for visiting!

SMART Goals Microlearning

SMART Goals Microlearning

So I've been making content in Rise, but it's all been specifically proprietary stuff (think company specific interview projects). I had a lot of fun using it, and I wanted to showcase it here, so I needed a new topic. It happens to be a brand new year, and that means resolutions. In my family we have a weird tradition where we gather around and revise our short and long-term goals at least once a year. So here's a shoutout to my mom, "Hi, Mom!" who instilled in me the magic of making goals.

Password 101 Computer Based Training Module

Password 101 Computer Based Training Module

This was my main project for my US-Stout certificate. This module was created for a target audience of senior citizens that want to learn strong password skills. It features simulations of Two-Factor Authentication and a website password creation form. The training module was created in Storyline with audio and video created in PowerPoint and Camtasia. This underwent the full ID process and I had a blast making it.

Storyboard for Password 101

Storyboard for Password 101

This is the storyboard I created for Password 101, I had already created a rough draft of the training module (I had to have a working draft for interviews so I had worked ahead of my ID class, sorry!) so it's a little more polished than it would normally be. I really enjoyed making the script and stylesheet.

Project Management Process

Project Management Process

This is was the final capstone project of my ID certificate. This is a project management for instructional design case study that we had to do in a team of 3 and I was the designated Project Manager. I removed all the names to respect the privacy of others. The company is fictional of course.

SCORM Reusable Learning Object

SCORM Reusable Learning Object

This is a short RLO on the topic of SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model) I made for an assignment in one of my classes. I created this in PowerPoint and imported it into Storyline (my first time doing that). It's nothing too in depth, but I really enjoyed designing the visuals to meet 508 standards.

How to Write a Check Explainer Video

Explainer Video - How to Write a Check

I had seen countless "explainer" ads on tv and wanted to try my hand at it. I went for a handmade look. I used a fair chunk of the Adobe Creative Suite to make this: Photoshop, After Effects, Audition, Premiere Pro, and Media Encoder. It was the first time I ever used After Effects since I usually animate in Photoshop, I ended up teaching myself as I was creating this so I'm pretty proud of it.

The video is over 5 minutes long so it might take a bit.

Bloom's Taxonomy Microlearning

Bloom's Taxonomy Microlearning

Since I began instructing, I have been inundated with learning theories, models, concepts, domains etc. A lot are only remembered when needed, but Bloom's Taxonomy stuck with me because it makes ID easier and just makes sense. So when I decided to make my first Storyline project, I decided it would make a great microlesson.

Captivate and Camtasia Tutorial

Captivate 360 Image Software Tutorial

I made this tutorial showing how to create a 360 image with hotspots in Adobe Captivate 2019. I made the screencast using a trial version of Camtasia (hence the ugly watermark) which was fun to use. Normally I would use Premiere Pro, but this is a portfolio, so the more brands of software the better!

The video is over 7 minutes long so it might take a bit.

Premiere Pro Music Video

Premiere Pro Music Video

This is video I made for my IT degree using Premiere Pro. The theme is the sky (hence the title, Eyes Up) and it features one of my favorite classical music pieces: Danse Macabre composed by Camille Saint-Saƫns. I am most proud of the way the timing of the video synchs with the music. This was my first time editing digital video outside of Photoshop and I had a lot of fun making this.

InDesign Photoshop Tutorial

InDesign Photoshop Tutorial

This is a project I did for my Bachelor's IT degree which required us to make a magazine in InDesign. The topic wasn't specified so Anne being Anne went straight to art and a Photoshop tutorial. The project is a few years old but shows that even when ID wasn't on my radar yet, I was still making learning materials for fun.

Virtual Reality & Simulations

Virtual Reality Simulation Experience

I keep getting asked about this in interviews and such. Since my current career field is very sensitive, I can't share anything that I've done for my work on here. What I can do is post a link to a software that I worked with for 5 years creating training simulations. So yes, I have *real* VR and Simulation experience.

That's all I'm going to say about it. Follow the link to the software and use your imagination.
